Holy Week in Spain

April 13, 2014 - April 21, 2014

Come to Spain in Easter and take part in the unique festivities, creating memories that will last forever. Each different region and place in Spain lives these days (both religious and festive) in its own unique fashion.

With the arrival of spring comes Easter week. It has centuries of history behind it and is one of Spain’s most authentic and emotive celebrations. The streets of the vast majority of Spain’s cities, towns and villages become the stage for religious fervor and devotion, combining grief and meditation in memory of Christ’s death. Music, art and color come together in magical processions – solemn parades in which crowds of people accompany religious images on their route through the towns.

Easter is celebrated in every corner of Spain, and each different place does so in its own special way. For centuries these festivities have been deeply-rooted in popular imagination and inextricably linked with art. This can be seen, for example, in the many images of Christ and the Virgin Mary, masterfully sculpted with incredible realism. These exceptional works of Spanish religious art (many of which are more than 500 years old) are paraded through the streets to be devoutly and respectfully admired by thousands of people.

Don’t think twice. Come and experience these unique, indescribable, diverse, exciting sensations. Discover the silence and austerity of Easter week in Castile-León, in the processions of LeónZamoraSalamanca and Valladolid. Their sober atmosphere is only broken by the sound of the trumpets and drums that accompany the religious figures as they pass. The pinnacle of the Easter week in Hellín (Albacete province) is the Tamborada(drum-playing), when up to 20,000 drums start playing. Experience intense moments like those in Cartagena, with thousands of people singing at the end of each procession in honor of the Virgin Mary. Easter week in Lorca is especially original – the processions include figures and scenes from the bible and from ancient civilisations. Feel the echo of the bugles that accompany the processions through the streets of Cuenca; enjoy the color and cheer of thousands of waving palm leaves in the Elche procession; take part in the huge Andalusian processions, especially those of Málaga and, above all, Seville, a city that lives these days of religious fervor with all its spirit.

These are to name but a few of the endless options. Come and discover these unique, truly Spanish, traditions. They are real signs of Spanish identity and display an extraordinary cultural wealth that will live on in your memory forever.  Contact us and we will set everything so that you can enjoy some amazing days in Spain.
